GUBA Video Support

June 30, 2006

GUBA Support is now added.  There has recently been some great news for GUBA (other than getting supported on thevideoawards :) ).  Warner Brothers has inked a deal to provide video on demand through their site.

Guba will offer two services to users. View-On-Demand (VOD) is priced from $1.79 to $2.99 and affords the user a 24 hour rental. Download-To-Own (DTO) will range from $9.99 to $19.99 for newer titles and allows unlimited viewing on 2 computers and 1 portable device, while allowing a single DVD burn for backup. The service will play content through Windows Media Player on a 640X480 screen. Downloads are progressive and will run up to 1.3MB/second.

Now in addition to the pay stuff they also have the user uploads which definitely has some great content and from their site you can pull down the videos in psp format and even iPod format.

update:  even though Revver has an interesting model we’ve learned that it provides an annoying pop-up to our IE users.  So for the time being we will have to disable this, until Revver can provide a flash player.

So this is really cool news. Why? Because Revver has an interesting model. Basically at the end of their videos there are ads displayed. If and when the ads are clicked the owner of the video is paid. What’s also cool is if you are not the owner and post the video then you will also get paid.

So how thevideoawards.com can help you is it gives you great forum to post those videos up. We have the traffic, which means you just need to put videos up which people like. So here’s how you can get started, head over to Revver and browse through the list of videos they have listed. You’ll need to setup an account so you can get an affiliate id. Once you get your id and find that video, head over to thevideoawards.com and submit that video. Once it’s all done your video will be posted and you potientially could start getting paid. It’s definitely an interesting model. There’s currently much discussion around ad placement in these videos… it’ll be interesting to see where it all lands.

This is great news. These types of deals just validates this type of delivery method.

Just months ago, NBC Universal was demanding that clips of its shows be removed from YouTube. In the time since, YouTube has emerged as an Internet tour de force, and now NBC has changed its tune.

With a little work we've been able to create RSS feeds for you favorite reader.  We are currently supporting three of them.  Most Voted, Most Commented and Most Recent.

Enjoy and thanks for all the feedback!

iFilm Support Added!

June 7, 2006

Great news, we are now taking in video submissions from iFilms.  So what are you waiting for, submit your video

Two things to note.

1.  We've added another category called music videos to the list.  We'll refine these lists as necessary.

2.  It seems that Google Video has changed how they are providing embed tags to share their videos.  They used to require a weird sigh key (some encryption key) which made it extremely difficult to automate any type of posting.  But now it looks like they have decided to move away from that and only use the docId to embed.  That's great news!

I'll also leave you with some Google Video sites for your enjoyment

Getting Dugg

Cool, I've popped up on Digg

Digg me now!

So Now What?

June 4, 2006

All those nights developing, all those days testing and finally a beta product is done. But now what? Well, by trade i'm a technologist, not a marketer. If you needed me to write a program to communicate with other systems to spread the word then i'm all over it. But when it comes to properly marketing this sort of stuff, it's out of my league.

So one thing I know how to do is blog. So i'll keep this blog up and about to talk about my experience and give you some updates on the site. I have a bunch of features planned which will hopefully enhance the experience so i'll talk more about those when they come.

I suppose there are other ways to get the name out. A couple i've already done and have gotten some decent traffic from (and I say decent because we've only been live for 2 days! :) ). I've posted the site on a couple web 2.0 directory lists. One being Buzzshout (site profile here) and the other being Web2List (site profile here.)
Outside of that I suppose there are the regular culprits. I could post it to Digg or Reddit. I could approach some other bloggers to take a look at it (sites like Techcrunch, Mashable, Micro Persuasion, Scoble (this is a .net app :) ), etc).

And here's one article to leave you with, it's a post I ran across giving some advice to getting traffic to your blog.

Welcome

June 3, 2006

Welcome to the official blog for TheVideoAwards.com website.

The Video Awards site is a forum for you to submit your videos for review and voting. The feature which sets it apart from everything is it has the ability to display videos from a multitude of sites. Sites including Google Video, YouTube Video, Jumpcut, Vimeo, vSocial… and we're adding more everyday!

Don't be shy, take a look and post your video or just enjoy some others. We've started out with some initial categories but plan on expanding as needed.

There's been quite a bit of lessons learned while building this site. One of them being if you plan on getting work done, don't watch any videos!
